Just because BMW bills its 2017 X1 as a “Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV)” doesn’t mean it shirks on utility. It’s quite the opposite—to the point that Car and Driver has hailed it as the king of luxury compact crossovers in its 10Best list for 2017. An overachiever by default, it offers best-in-class performance and utility.

It's been six consecutive years running that BMW sales have broken records. The start of a seventh looks much the same, with BMW, thanks to the activities of its three premium brands, BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce, delivering an overall increase of 6.8% more vehicles worldwide, a total of 163,288. BMW proper drove that gain, with a sales increase of 7.2%, totaling 143,553, thanks to its X1, 3 Series and flagship 7 Series…
