Call us spoiled, call us addicted, but we here at BMW of Southampton would be lying if we said we weren't hooked to our smart phones. But how could you blame us? You can do anything with these gizmos! Need directions for your new or used car? Want to surf YouTube for three hours? Need to access Google the second someone asks you a question we don't know the answer to? The possibilities are endless.
As long as you're keeping your eyes on the road, we don't have a bad thing to say about our precious, precious smartphones. Still, when you're so attached to something, nothing's worse than when that something doesn't work. And if you've ever lost a WiFi signal, you know what we're talking about.
Well thanks to BMW, those days of slow/shoddy/nonexistent connectivity are soon to be long gone. Now that automakers have started outfitting some of their models with WiFi hotspots, BMW is doing them one better by implementing WiFi at lightning fast LTE data speeds into their cars.
The wireless technology will come in the form of an LTE adapter that a driver can snap into a cradle dock on the center console of their vehicle and even charge through a USB port. Though it won't be able to connect to a vehicle's infotainment console, it does come with a built-in battery so that you can take it on the go, and it comes standard with a connection code that prevents others from leaching off your hotspot.
Still no word on how much the system will cost or what models we can expect to see it in, but with innovation like this, you just might never leave your car. But if you already spend enough time on your phone and are looking for a car that will let you unplug for a change, there's always the 2013 BMW M5 and the BMW 3 Series to help you do just that. So whether you're all local or just down the road in Bay Shore, come down and see us here at 759 County Rd. 39A in Southampton, NY 11968-4122 to go for a test drive today.
