For all the time we spend talking about our new and used cars here at BMW of Southampton, TV is usually the conversation of choice if you come take a stroll by our water cooler. It's really too bad that we don't have more occasions to share our love for The Simpson with you all, because we could talk all day about one of the funniest shows of all-time. But thanks to one like-minded gearhead, the planets have finally aligned.
If you've never seen the episode, the story of "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" revolves around Homer discovering that he has a long-lost brother who happens to be the head of a fledgling automaker. Upon meeting, Homer discovers that his brother is having trouble coming up with a new design that will help him corner the market, a car designed for the everyman, by the everyman. So when Homer offers to lend him a hand in the design process, Herb gives him carte blanche.
From there, Homer hits the drawing board and ultimately comes up with an $82,000 monstrosity aptly named "The Homer," quickly tanking his brother's business. As for what was so appalling about it, the list is pretty long. You've got a separate compartment for the kids to fight in away from their parents, three air horns that played "La Cucaracha" and some extra-large cup holders for thirsty Americans. Once upon a time, "The Homer" only lived in television, but thanks to one crafty Simpsons fan, "The Homer" has come to life.
Built from the body of an old BMW 3-Series, "The Homer" is a sight to see. Featuring everything that already made it such a memorable/horrible car to begin with, this custom creation has actually been outfitted with racing seats so it can compete in this year's 24 Hours of Le Mons competition. As for its chances at victory, we'll just have to wait and see.
So if you haven't seen the episode, you owe it to yourself to amend that situation. Or if you'd rather go for a spin in a vehicle with a bit more curb appeal, you test drive awaits you at our dealership here in Southampton, NY. No "Homers" allowed.
