You know, as much as the 'The Homer' single-handedly railroaded a fictional automaker into bankruptcy, we can't help but feel like giving Mr. Simpson a pat on the back for thinking outside the box as much as he did. After all, that's exactly the kind of thinking that's given us some of the cutting-edge technologies that currently reside in our new and used car lineup here at BMW of Southampton. Sure, we don't go overboard by throwing in air horns that play "La Cucaracha," but when it comes to motorcycle safety, a new way of thinking is just what the doctor ordered.
Now, it doesn't take much experience behind the throttle to see why motorcycle driving is significantly more dangerous than getting behind the wheel of, say, a 2013 BMW M3. The lack of seatbelts, the lack of a frame, the lack of two wheels - you get the picture. Nothing is more tragic than hearing about someone losing their life as the result of a motorcycle collision, and few automakers appreciate that more than our own.
So in an effort to reduce motorcycle-related injuries and fatalities to a minimum, BMW has created the DoubleR RaceAir one-piece racing suit. Designed in collaboration with the engineers at Dianese, the suit is a stylish number that's discreetly outfitted with Dianese's D-air Protect System. What makes the said system unique is that, if a cyclist gets involved in a collision or accident, the suit will deploy built-in airbags in all of 15 milliseconds.
It's all very exciting indeed, but we still have to wait until crash testing is completed before we can expect to see the suit make its way to the public. And if all goes according to plan, BMW plans to bring this airbag technology from the suit to the motorcycle itself.
But until that day comes, feel free to learn more about the safety features that already come standard on our lineup from the experts in our car parts department at our dealership here in Southampton, NY. You'll be awfully glad you did.
