Just because BMW bills its 2017 X1 as a “Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV)” doesn’t mean it shirks on utility. It’s quite the opposite—to the point that Car and Driver has hailed it as the king of luxury compact crossovers in its 10Best list for 2017. An overachiever by default, it offers best-in-class performance and utility.

Although the 2018 BMW M5 that debuted this week is more powerful and quicker than the outgoing model, that’s not the biggest part of the story. It’s that for the first time ever, this sedan will offer a standard M xDrive all-wheel drive setup instead of rear-wheel drive.
